Indian Navy SSR Medical Recruitment 2027 – Complete Guide for SSR (Med) 02/2027 Batch
Indian Navy SSR Medical Recruitment 2027 has been officially announced by the Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment, Naval Headquarters, New Delhi. Online applications are invited from unmarried male candidates for enrolment as sailors in the Medical Branch — Senior Secondary Recruits (Medical) 02/2027 batch. The application window is open from 14 March 2026 (00:01 hrs) to 06 April 2026 (17:00 hrs) at www.joinindiannavy.gov.in. The Stage I examination — INET (Indian Navy Entrance Test) 2026 — will be conducted in May 2026.
A critical distinction every candidate must understand before applying: SSR (Medical) is a regular sailor enrolment — not an Agniveer entry. Unlike the Agniveer SSR and MR entries (which are 4-year tenure-based), SSR Medical is a full-career naval engagement with an initial engagement period of 20 years, full pension and gratuity benefits on retirement, Leave Travel Concessions, Children’s Education Allowance, Group Housing benefits, and promotion prospects all the way up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I (Level 8 of the Defence Pay Matrix). For science stream candidates with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) at 10+2 level, this is one of the most stable and rewarding government career pathways available in 2026.
SSR Medical specifically covers the Indian Navy’s Medical Branch, deploying sailors in medical support, patient care, pharmacy, paramedical, and allied health roles across naval shore establishments, hospital ships, and medical facilities. This notification covers only the 02/2027 batch — induction at INS Chilka, Odisha in May 2027. The INET 2026 for SSR Medical shares its examination window with Agniveer SSR and MR applications, but the SSR Medical INET has a distinctly different four-section structure including Biology in place of Mathematics.
Recruitment Overview
The Indian Navy’s Medical Branch provides healthcare and paramedical support to naval personnel and their families across all naval commands, bases, hospital ships, and shore establishments in India and deployed at sea. SSR (Medical) sailors serve as the backbone of the Navy’s medical support infrastructure, working alongside Naval medical officers in roles that directly impact the health and operational readiness of the force. Unlike combat-branch sailors, Medical Branch sailors are deployed primarily in clinical, paramedical, and health administrative roles — making this entry particularly suitable for candidates with a strong interest in healthcare and the life sciences.

Age Limit
The age eligibility for SSR Medical 02/2027 is defined by a single birth date range — unlike the Agniveer entries which have separate birth date ranges for two batches. For SSR Medical 02/2027, candidates must be born between 01 May 2005 and 31 Oct 2009 (both dates inclusive). This single birth date range applies for both the INET application and the Stage II process — there is no dual-batch complexity here. Candidates must also be unmarried at the time of enrolment.
| Batch | Date of Birth Range (Both Dates Inclusive) | Marital Status |
|---|---|---|
| SSR (Med) 02/2027 — INET Application & Stage II | 01 May 2005 – 31 Oct 2009 | Must be unmarried |
Eligibility Criteria
The SSR Medical entry has a distinctive and specific educational eligibility — 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) from a recognised Board of School Education, with a minimum 50% marks in aggregate AND minimum 40% in each individual subject. This dual-condition marks requirement is unique to SSR Medical — unlike most other Indian Navy entries which only specify an aggregate minimum. A candidate scoring 55% overall but only 38% in Biology would be ineligible — the per-subject 40% floor applies to each PCB subject independently. This is a Biology-stream entry, making it the only Indian Navy SSR category that specifically targets PCB science stream students who aspire to work in healthcare and medical support roles.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Qualifying Examination | 10+2 (Senior Secondary) — passed or appearing (2025–26 academic year) |
| Compulsory Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, AND Biology (PCB — all three compulsory) |
| Minimum Aggregate Marks | 50% in aggregate across all subjects |
| Minimum Per-Subject Marks | Minimum 40% in EACH of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology individually |
| Appearing Candidates | Class 12 students appearing in 2025–26 board exams are eligible to apply — must produce original mark sheet at subsequent stages |
| Gender | Unmarried Male only (female candidates are NOT eligible for this entry) |
| Nationality | Indian |
Vacancy Details
The official notification does not specify a fixed number of vacancies for SSR Medical 02/2027. Vacancies for SSR (Med) are earmarked in a state-wise manner — meaning that like Agniveer SSR, the shortlisting and merit list for SSR Medical is based on state-wise merit. Cut-off marks for shortlisting to Stage II will vary from state to state as vacancies are allotted state-wise. This means candidates from states with higher competition (larger applicant pools per vacancy) will face higher cut-offs. Candidates are advised to check the official portal at joinindiannavy.gov.in for vacancy updates once published.
| Post | Batch | Gender | Total Vacancies | Merit List Basis |

Selection Process
The SSR Medical selection process follows the same three-stage structure as Agniveer SSR and MR — but with a Biology-focused INET format and full regular service conditions thereafter. Every stage is eliminatory.
Stage I: INET 2026 — SSR Medical Specific Format
The SSR Medical INET is a computer-based, bilingual (Hindi & English), objective-type exam of 100 questions, 1 mark each, conducted in 1 hour. The four sections are English, Science, Biology, and General Awareness at 10+2 standard — notably replacing Mathematics (used in Agniveer SSR) with Biology, reflecting the Medical Branch’s academic requirements. Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer applies. Candidates must pass in all sections and in aggregate. The Indian Navy reserves the right to determine pass marks. Centre allocation is at the Navy’s discretion — three city preferences must be given.
Stage II Part A: Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
PFT is mandatory and qualifying for all SSR Medical candidates, conducted at candidates’ own risk. Only male candidates are eligible for this entry, and the PFT standards are as follows:
| 1.6 Km Run | Squats (Uthak Baithak) | Push-ups | Bent Knee Sit-ups |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 min 30 sec | 20 | 15 | 15 |
Proficiency in sports, swimming, and extra-curricular activities is desirable. Begin physical conditioning from the application submission date — the 6:30 run target requires sustained cardiovascular training.
Stage II Part B: Written Examination — SSR Medical Format
The Stage II written exam is conducted only for PFT qualifiers and mirrors the INET format exactly — 100 objective-type bilingual questions, 1 mark each, 1 hour, four sections: English, Science, Biology, and General Awareness at 10+2 standard. Pass in all sections and in aggregate is mandatory. The Provisional Select List is prepared based on Stage II written exam performance, subject to PFT qualification and medical fitness.
Stage II Part C: Recruitment Medical Examination
Medical examination is conducted for all PFT qualifiers by authorised military doctors. Candidates found medically unfit may appeal for review at a designated military hospital (allocated by the Indian Navy) within 5 days. No certificate from any other hospital will be considered. No further review after the designated hospital review is permissible. Pre-enrolment medicals are also conducted at INS Chilka before final induction — failure results in rejection at that stage.
Exam Syllabus & Pattern
The full syllabus and sample papers for the SSR Medical INET and Stage II written examination are available on the official website at joinindiannavy.gov.in. The key differentiator of the SSR Medical exam compared to Agniveer SSR is the inclusion of Biology in place of Mathematics — directly reflecting the PCB academic background required. All sections are at 10+2 standard.
SSR Medical INET & Stage II Written Exam Pattern
| Section | Standard | Negative Marking | Key Topics (General Guidance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 10+2 | 0.25 per wrong answer | Grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, sentence correction |
| Science | 10+2 | 0.25 per wrong answer | Physics and Chemistry at 11th-12th NCERT level — mechanics, electricity, chemical bonding, organic basics |
| Biology | 10+2 | 0.25 per wrong answer | Human physiology, genetics, cell biology, plant biology, ecology, biotechnology basics at NCERT level |
| General Awareness | 10+2 | 0.25 per wrong answer | Current affairs, Indian Navy facts, defence knowledge, Indian geography, history, polity |
| Total | — | — | 100 Questions | 100 Marks | 60 Minutes |
Preparation Strategy for SSR Medical INET
SSR Medical aspirants have the significant advantage of preparing for an exam closely aligned with their 10+2 PCB curriculum. For Biology, focus on NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology thoroughly — human health and disease, reproduction, genetics and evolution, biotechnology, ecosystem, and body systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous). For Science (Physics & Chemistry), cover electricity, light, chemical reactions, atomic structure, and organic chemistry at Class 12 level. For English, practice grammar rules, reading comprehension, and vocabulary at board-exam level. For General Awareness, build knowledge of Indian Navy — ship names, bases, commands, recent exercises — along with current affairs, Indian geography, and national events. Solve previous year SSR Medical question papers from the official website for the most relevant practice material.
Pay, Promotion & Perquisites
The pay and benefits of SSR Medical sailors are substantially different from Agniveer SSR — and considerably more comprehensive given the regular, long-term nature of the service. Understanding this difference is critical for candidates choosing between the two entries. SSR Medical offers a full government career with pension, promotion up to MCPO-I, and the possibility of commissioned officer rank — none of which are available under the Agniveer scheme.
Pay Structure
| Stage | Pay / Stipend | Additional Allowances |
|---|---|---|
| During Initial Training Period | ₹14,600/month (stipend) | — |
| On Completion of Initial Training | Level 3 of Defence Pay Matrix: ₹21,700 – ₹69,100/month | MSP @ ₹5,200/month + DA as applicable |
| Estimated In-Hand (Post Training) | Approximately ₹30,000 – ₹35,000/month (including MSP & DA at basic level) | Additional allowances as per posting and service conditions |
Promotion Prospects
| Rank / Level | Pay Matrix Level | Pay Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial Entry (Sailor SSR Med) | Level 3 | ₹21,700 – ₹69,100 | After successful training completion |
| Master Chief Petty Officer-I (Top Sailor Rank) | Level 8 | ₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100 | Maximum promotion for sailors; + MSP ₹5,200 + DA |
| Commissioned Officer Route | Commissioned Officer Pay Scales | As per applicable Commissioned Officer Pay Matrix | Opportunity exists for high performers who qualify prescribed exams and clear SSBs |
Comprehensive Perquisites
SSR Medical sailors receive a full suite of service perquisites throughout their career: books, reading material, uniforms, food, and accommodation provided during training and thereafter as per entitlement; medical treatment for self and family; Leave Travel Concessions (LTC) for self and dependents; Group Housing Scheme benefits; Annual and Casual Leave; Children’s Education Allowance; and House Rent Allowance. Post-retirement benefits include pension, gratuity, and leave encashment — benefits entirely absent from the Agniveer scheme. Additionally, a contributory Insurance Cover of ₹75 lakhs is applicable for regular sailors (compared to ₹48 lakh non-contributory insurance for Agniveers).
How to Apply Online – Step by Step
- Recent passport-size color photograph (taken not before March 2026) — 10 KB to 50 KB, front portrait, light background, no head gear (except Sikhs). Candidate must hold a black slate with name and date written in white chalk in capital letters.
- Scanned original 10+2 mark sheet showing PCB with 50% aggregate and 40%+ in each subject (or Class 12 admit card if appearing in 2025–26 exam)
- Scanned 10th mark sheet (for age/DOB verification)
- Domicile certificate (original scan)
- NCC ‘C’ Certificate or Sponsorship Certificate (if applicable — upload for INET exemption)
- Valid personal email ID and mobile number (all future communications — no postal communication)
- Online payment method — Net Banking / Visa / Master / RuPay Credit-Debit Card / UPI (for ₹550 + GST fee)
- Visit the official portal at joinindiannavy.gov.in from 14 March 2026 (00:01 hrs). Apply as early as possible — do not wait for the last date.
- Register and create your account using your own active mobile number and email ID. All future communications including admit card, results, and call-up letters use only these contact details — no documents sent by post.
- Fill the SSR (Med) 02/2027 application form carefully with accurate personal, academic, and domicile details. Provide three city preferences for INET — once selected, the centre cannot be changed.
- Upload all required documents including 10+2 mark sheet (confirming PCB with 50% aggregate and 40% per subject), 10th mark sheet, domicile certificate, and NCC/Sponsorship certificate if applicable.
- Capture live webcam photograph as required during form filling. Ensure excellent lighting and a plain background. Also prepare the black slate photograph (taken not before March 2026) showing name and date in white chalk in capital letters.
- Pay the examination fee of ₹550 + 18% GST online. Wait for admit card generation to confirm successful payment. If payment is deducted but admit card not generated, wait 7 working days for automatic refund.
- Submit the application, save your confirmation, and use the 2-day correction window (10–11 April 2026) if needed to fix any errors. Download your INET admit card tentatively one week before the exam from joinindiannavy.gov.in.
- Not verifying the per-subject 40% minimum — candidates often check only the aggregate 50% condition but miss that each of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology must individually meet the 40% floor. Verify your marks subject-wise before applying.
- Incorrect domicile information — wrong domicile details result in cancellation at any stage of recruitment, training, and thereafter with no recourse. This is particularly critical for SSR Medical given the state-wise merit list and state-wise vacancy allocation.
- Missing the single correction window — unlike Agniveer SSR, SSR Medical appears to have only one correction window (10–11 April 2026) with no additional post-INET correction window mentioned. Review every field of your application before this window closes.
Important Instructions for Candidates
- SSR Medical is a regular sailor entry with 20-year initial engagement — not Agniveer. Candidates must be prepared for a long-term full defence career commitment before applying.
- All original documents uploaded during application must be brought to every stage of recruitment including INS Chilka. Mismatches between online details and original documents at any stage result in immediate cancellation.
- Mobile phones and electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the INET examination premises — violation leads to disqualification and ban from future examinations.
- Tattoos are permitted only on the inner face of forearms (inside of elbow to wrist) and the reversed/dorsal side of the palm. Tattoos anywhere else result in disqualification from recruitment.
- Minimum height for male candidates is 157 cm. Height relaxation regulations are at joinindiannavy.gov.in. Clean ear wax and remove dental tartar before the medical examination.
- Police Verification Form must be submitted at INS Chilka with verification from the Superintendent of Police of the candidate’s jurisdiction. Candidates without verified Police Verification are not eligible for enrolment.
- This content is for informational purposes only. Candidates must refer to the official notification at joinindiannavy.gov.in for all binding details.
Expert Tips to Crack Indian Navy SSR Medical Recruitment 2027
Understand This Is a 20-Year Career Decision Before Applying
SSR Medical is a full-career Regular Sailor enrolment — you are committing to an initial engagement of 20 years in the Indian Navy. This is categorically different from the 4-year Agniveer entries. The benefits are vastly superior: pension, gratuity, leave encashment, LTC, children’s education allowance, housing benefits, and ₹75 lakh insurance coverage. But the commitment is also significantly higher. Before applying, research the Indian Navy’s Medical Branch career trajectory thoroughly at joinindiannavy.gov.in — understand what the 20-year service entails, where you could be posted, and what career development opportunities exist up to MCPO-I and beyond.
Verify Both Eligibility Conditions Simultaneously
SSR Medical has a uniquely dual marks condition — 50% aggregate AND 40% in each subject individually. Many candidates with borderline marks in one PCB subject assume the aggregate condition compensates — it does not. Calculate your Physics, Chemistry, and Biology marks individually from your 10+2 mark sheet and confirm each exceeds 40% before proceeding. Appearing candidates who are borderline must ensure they secure the required marks in each subject in their final board result before the subsequent recruitment stages. Producing an original mark sheet with one subject below 40% at Stage II will result in outright rejection.
The Biology Section Is Your Competitive Edge — Maximise It
Unlike general SSR candidates who must prepare Mathematics for INET, SSR Medical candidates who have a strong PCB academic background are in their natural comfort zone for the Biology section of INET. Biology questions at 10+2 NCERT level are highly predictable — human physiology, genetics, reproduction, ecology, and biotechnology collectively cover 80–90% of what appears in Navy Biology assessments. Candidates who invest 2–3 weeks in NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology revision and past paper practice can routinely score 90%+ in the Biology section. This gives SSR Medical specialists a structural scoring advantage over candidates unfamiliar with the subject.
Begin Physical Training from the Application Date
Stage II for SSR Medical 02/2027 is tentatively in March 2027 — approximately 12 months after the application window. This is a generous preparation window for the PFT. Use it fully. The 1.6 km run in 6:30 minutes, 20 squats, 15 push-ups, and 15 sit-ups are eminently achievable with 3–4 months of consistent training. Begin with a progressive running programme from March 2026 and add strength training for upper body (push-ups) and core (sit-ups) twice a week. Maintain fitness throughout the preparation period — do not allow deconditioning between INET and Stage II.
Medical Pre-Assessment Before Stage II
Getting medically rejected after clearing INET and PFT is a deeply frustrating outcome that is often avoidable with advance preparation. The two most critical medical standards to self-verify are vision and tattoo placement. Uncorrected vision must be at least 6/12 in both eyes — visit an ophthalmologist and have this measured well before Stage II. If you have tattoos anywhere other than the inner forearm or back of the palm, you will be barred regardless of exam and fitness performance. Additionally, get your ears cleaned for wax and have dental tartar professionally removed before attending the medical examination — this is explicitly stated in the notification and is easily addressed in advance.
Monitor the Portal and Protect Your Domicile Status
All communications for SSR Medical 02/2027 are electronic only — results, call-up letters, and admit cards are published exclusively on your dashboard at joinindiannavy.gov.in. Keep your registered mobile number and email ID active throughout the entire 14-month recruitment cycle (March 2026 – May 2027). The state-wise merit list makes your domicile certificate one of the most critical documents in your application — ensure it is valid, from the correct authority, and correctly reflects your actual state of domicile. Wrong domicile information leads to permanent cancellation of candidature at any stage of recruitment, training, or thereafter.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Q1. What is Indian Navy SSR Medical and is it different from Agniveer SSR?
- Yes — SSR Medical is a completely different entry from Agniveer SSR. SSR (Medical) is a regular sailor enrolment for 20 years with full pension, gratuity, and promotion prospects up to MCPO-I and commissioned officer. Agniveer SSR is a 4-year fixed-term entry with no pension or gratuity. SSR Medical specifically serves the Indian Navy’s Medical Branch and requires 10+2 with PCB — not PCM as in Agniveer SSR.
- Q2. What is the last date to apply for SSR Medical 02/2027?
- The last date to submit the online application is 06 April 2026 at 17:00 hrs at joinindiannavy.gov.in. A correction window is available from 10–11 April 2026.

- During training, a stipend of ₹14,600/month is paid. On successful completion of training, sailors are placed at Level 3 of the Defence Pay Matrix (₹21,700 – ₹69,100/month) plus Military Service Pay of ₹5,200/month plus DA. This is a regular pay scale — not a fixed package as in Agniveer — and increases with promotions over a 20-year career.
- Q6. What is the promotion scope for SSR Medical sailors?
- SSR Medical sailors can be promoted up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I, which is Level 8 of the Defence Pay Matrix (₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100/month) plus MSP and DA. High performers who qualify prescribed examinations and clear Services Selection Boards may also be promoted to commissioned officer rank.
- Q7. What is the insurance cover for SSR Medical sailors?
- SSR Medical sailors are covered by a contributory Insurance Cover of ₹75 lakhs. This is different from and higher than the ₹48 lakh non-contributory life insurance provided to Agniveer SSR sailors.
- Q8. What is the INET exam pattern for SSR Medical?
- Computer-based, bilingual (Hindi & English), objective-type MCQ exam. 100 questions of 1 mark each, completed in 1 hour. Four sections: English, Science, Biology, and General Awareness — all at 10+2 standard. Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer. Pass in all sections and in aggregate is mandatory.
- Q9. Is SSR Medical open to female candidates?
- No. The SSR Medical 02/2027 notification specifically invites applications from unmarried male candidates only. Female candidates are not eligible for this entry.
- Q10. What is the initial engagement period for SSR Medical?
- The initial engagement is for 20 years, subject to successful completion of training. This is a full-career regular sailor engagement — substantially different from the 4-year Agniveer tenure.
- Q11. What are the post-retirement benefits for SSR Medical sailors?
- Post-retirement benefits include pension, gratuity, and leave encashment as per government regulations in force. During service, sailors also receive Leave Travel Concessions, Children’s Education Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Group Housing benefits, and medical treatment for self and dependents — none of which are available under the Agniveer scheme.
- Q12. Can NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders skip INET for SSR Medical?
- Yes. Verified NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders and Sponsor candidates must upload their original certificates during Stage I application. After verification through DG NCC (NCC certificates) and CABS (Sponsorship certificates), these candidates are exempted from INET and directly issued Stage II call-up letters based on eligibility.
