Stage 1: Written Test (Objective Type – MCQs) – 100 Marks

Note: All questions are in English only. Candidates must prepare both old laws (IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act) AND the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Duties and Responsibilities of Legal Assistant
- Assist the Hon’ble Judge in judicial and administrative work
- Conduct legal research and search in matters as required
- Attend Court and make notes of proceedings
- Draft memorandums, opinions, comments, and monographs on legal matters
- Research from materials and sources suggested by the Hon’ble Judge
- Perform duties as directed by the High Court
- Maintain confidentiality about all matters and information
Key Restrictions:
- No Practice: Cannot practice as a lawyer during tenure
- No Other Employment: Cannot take up any full-time or part-time engagement
- No Appearance: Cannot appear before the Hon’ble Judge they were attached to for 1 year after termination
- No Case Appearance: Cannot appear in any case they worked on during tenure

Tenure and Contract Terms
Initial Term
Appointed initially for a period of 11 months.
Extension
May be extended up to a further period of maximum 11 months only (total maximum 22 months), subject to:
- Recommendation of the Hon’ble Judge concerned
- Approval of the Honourable the Chief Justice
Termination
- By either side: One month notice or one month salary in lieu thereof
- By High Court (without notice): At any time if services found unsatisfactory or rules violated
No Right to Employment
The assignment as Legal Assistant does not confer any right of employment under the High Court or State Government.
