Vacancy & Category Analysis – Subject-wise Fellowship Limit
CSIR does not release fixed category-wise vacancies. Fellowships are subject-wise limited and vary every exam cycle. Based on previous years, total JRF fellowships across all subjects are around 1,500-2,000. Below are the subjects and general competition insight.
| Subject Code | Subject Name | Expected Fellowship Share (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 701 | Chemical Sciences | Highest (~30% of total) |
| 702 | Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences | Lowest (~10%) |
| 703 | Life Sciences | Highest (~35%) |
| 704 | Mathematical Sciences | Moderate (~15%) |
| 705 | Physical Sciences | Moderate (~10-15%) |
Category-wise breakdown not released in official notification. Based on standard GoI norms, OBC (NCL), SC, ST, EWS, PwD reservations apply as per central roster. However, fellowship allocation is merit-cum-subject wise. Competition ratio: With approx 2.5 lakh candidates appearing (based on previous CSIR NET cycles) and roughly 1,800 JRFs, the selection ratio is about 1:139. OBC/SC/ST candidates have relaxed cut-off percentages (50% marks eligibility vs 55% for General). PwD category enjoys lowest qualifying marks (25% in each part) and 5 years age relaxation.
Salary & In-Hand Calculation – JRF vs SRF
| Fellowship Stage | Monthly Stipend (Basic) | Annual Contingent Grant | Approx In-Hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| JRF (first 2 years) | ₹37,000 | ₹20,000 (reimbursed directly) | ₹37,000 + grant |
| SRF (after 2 years, if PhD registered) | ₹42,000 | Same as above | ₹42,000 + grant |
In-hand breakdown: No TDS deduction on fellowship stipend as per Income Tax Act. However, contingent grant is reimbursed against bills (travel, books, consumables). No HRA/DA applicable because fellowship is not a salary, but many host institutes provide shared accommodation or HRA from contingency. Final take-home = full ₹37,000 (for JRF) plus annual ₹20,000 for research expenses.
Comparison: Compared to UGC NET JRF (same ₹37,000 but without guaranteed annual grant), CSIR NET JRF offers additional ₹20,000 contingency grant – effectively ₹38,666 per month average. ICMR JRF also offers ₹37,000 but no annual grant. Thus CSIR NET is financially superior for research scholars.
Application Fee – Category Wise
| Category | Fee (INR) | Payment Mode |
|---|---|---|
| General | ₹1150 | Net Banking / Debit/Credit Card / UPI (SBI or ICICI gateway) |
| General-EWS / OBC (NCL) | ₹600 | |
| SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender | ₹325 |
⚠️ Fee Mistake Warning: Do not use international credit cards unless you have domestic transaction enabled. Service charges (up to ₹5+ GST) extra. After payment, Confirmation Page must be generated – if not, transaction failed; pay again (duplicate will be refunded within 15 days).
Age Limit (Only for JRF – No Age Limit for Assistant Professor/PhD)
| Category | Max Age (as of July 2026) | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 30 years | No relaxation (except research/armed forces) |
| OBC (NCL) | 35 years | 5 years |
| SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender / Women | 35 years | 5 years |
| Research experience (certificate required) | Up to 35 years | Max 5 years (cumulative) |
| Armed forces service | Up to 35 years | Length of service subject to max 5 years |
Example calculation: If your date of birth is 15 July 1996, you turn 30 on 15 July 2026. Exam concludes in July 2026 – you are eligible only if born on/after 1 July 1996 (General). OBC candidate born 15 July 1991 turns 35 – still eligible due to 5-year relaxation.
Detailed Eligibility Criteria – Qualification & Experience
| Post | Qualification Required | Minimum % | Final Year Allowed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| JRF + Assistant Professor | Master’s degree or equivalent (any recognized university) | 55% (Gen/EWS) 50% (reserved) |
Yes (provisional, complete within 2 years) |
| Only Assistant Professor + PhD | Same as above | Same | Yes (complete within 1 year for PhD only) |
| 4-year Bachelor’s degree holders | Bachelor’s (B.S./B.Tech/B.E etc.) | 75% (70% for reserved) | Final year allowed (complete within 2 years for JRF/1 year for PhD) |
Most common eligibility mistake: OBC candidates from state list (not in central OBC NCL list) cannot claim OBC benefit; they must apply as General or EWS if income eligible. Also, candidates with Post Graduate diploma must get equivalence certificate from AIU before applying.
Selection Process – 3-Stage CBT
Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT)
All candidates must appear for 180-minute MCQ exam. Part A (General Aptitude) common for all subjects. Part B (subject-specific conventional MCQs). Part C (analytical/higher order questions). Negative marking varies by subject – refer pattern table below.
Stage 2: Answer Key Challenge & Result Declaration
NTA displays provisional answer keys; candidates can challenge (₹200 per question). Final answer key determines score. No re-evaluation after result.
Stage 3: Certificate Validity & Interview for PhD (if required by institute)
JRF qualified candidates may need to appear for interview for PhD admission as per UGC regulations 2022. Assistant Professor certificate has no expiry. PhD admission score valid for 1 year.
