NCL Apprentice 2026: Overview and Quick Snapshot

1,607 vacancies are now open under the Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) Apprentice Trainee notification for FY 2026-27, covering how many OBC vacancies in NCL Apprentice 2026 and all category breakdowns across 42 disciplines. NCL, a Miniratna subsidiary of Coal India Limited operating under the Ministry of Coal, has invited applications from Indian nationals who completed their qualifying degree or ITI from a recognized institution in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh. The training period is one year. A notable restriction competitors rarely mention: candidates who have already undergone apprenticeship training or hold 1+ year of job experience are summarily ineligible.

Quick Eligibility Check

You MAY be eligible if:

  • You are an Indian national aged 18–26 years as on 01/06/2026 (born between 01/06/2000 and 01/06/2008)
  • Your qualifying degree/diploma/ITI is from an AICTE/UGC/BTE/NCVT/SCVT recognised institution in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh
  • You passed your qualifying course after June 2022
  • You have never undergone apprenticeship training nor have 1+ year of job experience
  • Paramedical candidates hold a valid state registration certificate from the respective council
You are NOT eligible if:

  • Your qualifying institution is located outside UP or MP
  • You completed your degree/diploma before June 2022
  • You possess a higher qualification than prescribed for the applied post
  • Your degree was obtained via part-time, correspondence, or distance learning mode

A critical point specific to this notification: candidates whose institution is outside UP or MP are ineligible even if their degree is from a nationally recognised university – this disqualifies a large number of otherwise-qualified applicants who overlook this geographic condition.

Vacancy and Category Analysis

Category UR OBC SC ST EWS PwBD* Total
All Disciplines Combined 652 336 291 168 160 58 (H) 1,607

*PwBD seats are horizontal reservation (cross-cutting across all categories). H = Horizontal.

Discipline Type Largest Single Trade/Post Vacancies Stipend
Graduate Apprentice Bachelor of Commerce 58 ₹12,300
Diploma Apprentice Diploma in Electrical Engineering 72 ₹10,900
Trade Apprentice (ITI) ITI Fitter 349 ₹10,560
Paramedical Diploma in General Nursing & Midwifery 60 ₹12,700

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates hold 336 seats – the largest share among all reserved categories, accounting for roughly 21% of total vacancies. SC candidates have 291 seats and ST candidates 168 seats. The 58 PwBD slots operate as horizontal reservations, meaning they are distributed across existing category seats rather than added on top.

With 1,607 total vacancies and approximately 3–5 lakh expected applicants based on similar Coal India apprentice cycles in 2024–25, the effective selection ratio stands at roughly 1 in 200 to 1 in 300. OBC candidates face relatively lower competition than UR candidates because OBC seats are ring-fenced and many OBC applicants historically compete in the UR pool without claiming their category benefit – always apply under your correct category.

Stipend Details

Apprentice Category Monthly Stipend Who Pays
Graduate Apprentices (all disciplines) ₹12,300 NCL + GoI share via DBT
Diploma Apprentices (all disciplines) ₹10,900 NCL + GoI share via DBT
Trade Apprentices (ITI) – most trades ₹10,560 NCL directly
ITI Welder (exception) ₹9,600 NCL directly
Paramedical – Degree level ₹13,700 NCL + GoI share via DBT
Paramedical – Diploma level ₹12,700 NCL + GoI share via DBT
Important: These are gross stipend figures as per the Apprentices Act, 1961. Apprenticeship stipends are not salary and are not subject to standard payroll deductions like PF, NPS, or income tax TDS in the same manner as regular employment. The amount stated is effectively the take-home amount, paid directly to the trainee’s Aadhaar-linked bank account. No HRA, DA, or TA is admissible under the apprenticeship framework.

Compared to a regular Central Government Group-C post at Pay Level 2 (which yields approximately ₹18,000–₹22,000 in-hand after deductions), this apprenticeship stipend of ₹9,600–₹13,700 is lower – but the apprenticeship carries no bond, no PF deduction, and provides a statutory training certificate that significantly improves future employment prospects in PSUs. No accommodation, food, or transport is provided during training.

Application Fee

Application fee is not mentioned in the official notification. Candidates are advised to check the NATS/NAPS portal at the time of registration, as portal-level processing fees may apply separately from NCL.

Age Limit

Category Min Age Max Age Relaxation
General / UR / EWS 18 years 26 years Nil
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 18 years 29 years +3 years
SC / ST 18 years 31 years +5 years
PwBD (General) 18 years 36 years +10 years
PwBD (OBC) 18 years 39 years +13 years
PwBD (SC/ST) 18 years 41 years +15 years

Cut-off date for age calculation is 01/06/2026. A General category candidate born on 01/06/2000 is exactly 26 years old on the cut-off date and is eligible; a candidate born on 31/05/2000 would be just over 26 and ineligible. An OBC candidate born on 01/06/1997 would be exactly 29 on cut-off date and eligible under OBC relaxation.

Qualification Requirements

Apprentice Type Required Qualification Additional Requirement
Graduate Apprentice Full-time Degree in relevant discipline From UP/MP recognised institution
Diploma Apprentice Full-time Diploma in relevant discipline From UP/MP recognised institution
Trade Apprentice (ITI) 10th Pass + ITI certificate in relevant trade National/State Trade Certificate mandatory
Paramedical Relevant Degree or Diploma Valid state registration certificate required

Degrees obtained through part-time, correspondence, or distance learning are explicitly disqualified. Final year students are not eligible – the notification requires the qualification to already be passed and the result declared. Equivalent qualifications are not mentioned as acceptable; only the exact disciplines listed in Table 3 of the notification qualify.

Selection Process

Stage 1: Merit List Preparation

For Graduate and Diploma applicants, merit is drawn solely on the basis of marks scored in the qualifying degree/diploma examination – the higher your percentage, the better your rank. For ITI Trade applicants, merit is based on the average of Matriculation (10th) passing percentage and the NTC/STC certificate marks. There is no written exam. Enter your percentage accurately – any mismatch found during scrutiny results in immediate cancellation.

Stage 2: Document Scrutiny

Shortlisted candidates are called for original document verification at NCL Singrauli. The date is intimated by email. Failure to appear with all originals within the stipulated time cancels the candidature – the next merit-panel candidate gets the offer.

Stage 3: Medical Fitness Test

Final joining is subject to a medical fitness certificate issued by a government hospital medical officer of rank not below Assistant Civil Surgeon, following Mines Rules 1955. The certificate must be issued after 25 May 2026 (notification release date) – older certificates are not accepted.

Your first 7 days after applying:

  1. Save your NATS/NAPS Enrolment ID – it is required at every subsequent stage
  2. Print and store a hard copy of your submitted application immediately
  3. Prepare your percentage certificate from your institute if CGPA was awarded, since equivalent percentage must be stated to two decimal points
  4. Arrange your state registration certificate (paramedical candidates) or National/State Trade Certificate (ITI candidates) – missing this at scrutiny cancels your candidature
  5. Monitor your registered email and nclcil.in for the merit list expected on 20 June 2026

Exam Syllabus

Official syllabus not announced – this is a merit-based apprentice selection with no written examination. Selection is based entirely on qualifying examination marks. Monitor the official notification for updates.

  5. Fill in all details: date of birth, caste category, academic marks (total marks scored AND maximum marks separately), address, and upload scanned photograph and signature.

Three rejection mistakes specific to this recruitment:
1. Entering CGPA without converting to percentage equivalent up to two decimal points – the portal expects a percentage figure, not a grade.
2. Applying without first completing NATS/NAPS registration – if your contract cannot be registered with BOAT-WR/RDSDE Bhopal after selection, your candidature is cancelled and the next candidate is offered the slot.
3. Submitting a medical fitness certificate dated before 25 May 2026 – only certificates issued after the notification date are accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the monthly stipend for NCL Apprentice 2026 and is it the full take-home amount?
Approximately ₹9,600 to ₹13,700 per month depending on the apprentice category – ITI Welder receives the lowest at ₹9,600, while Paramedical Degree apprentices receive the highest at ₹13,700. Under the Apprenticeship Act framework, no PF, NPS, or standard payroll deductions apply, so the stated stipend is effectively the take-home figure. Payment is made directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account on an attendance basis.
What is the last date to apply and which portals are used?
As per the notification, the last date to submit applications online is 15 June 2026. Graduate and Diploma candidates must apply through the NATS portal; ITI Trade candidates must apply through the NAPS portal. Paper applications are not accepted under any circumstance.
What is the total vacancy count and which discipline has the most seats?
Based on the official notification, the grand total is 1,607 apprentice training positions across 42 disciplines. ITI Fitter has the single largest seat count at 349, followed by ITI Electrician at 244. Among graduate disciplines, Bachelor of Commerce leads with 58 seats.
Are candidates from universities outside Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh eligible?
Candidates whose qualifying institution is located outside UP or MP are not eligible, as per the notification’s explicit geographic condition. The institution must be functional and operational in either of these two states – the location of the institution matters, not the candidate’s home state.
What is the age limit and how is the cut-off date applied?
Candidates must be between 18 and 26 years as on 01/06/2026, meaning they should have been born between 01/06/2000 and 01/06/2008. OBC candidates get 3 years of relaxation (up to 29 years); SC/ST candidates get 5 years (up to 31 years); PwBD General candidates get 10 years (up to 36 years).
Is a degree obtained through distance or correspondence mode acceptable for NCL Apprentice 2026?
Qualifications obtained through part-time, correspondence, or distance learning are explicitly stated as ineligible in the official notification. Only full-time regular courses in the relevant discipline are accepted. This disqualifies many working professionals who upgraded qualifications through open universities.
Can a candidate who has already done an apprenticeship elsewhere apply again?
Candidates who have previously undergone apprenticeship training under the Apprenticeship Act, or who have 1 year or more of job experience, are summarily ineligible. This is a firm disqualification condition unique to apprentice notifications and is often missed by experienced candidates applying for the first time to NCL.
