CSIR-CIMFR – India’s premier coal and mining research laboratory under CSIR – is recruiting for its Dhanbad campus as well as regional centres at Bilaspur, Nagpur, Ranchi, Roorkee, and Raniganj. Quick Eligibility Check
- You have passed SSC/10th standard with Science subjects scoring at least 55% marks.
- You hold an ITI certificate or national/state trade certificate in one of the 11 advertised trades from a recognised institution.
- Alternatively, you have 2 years’ full-time apprentice experience OR 3 years’ work experience in the relevant trade under a Government/PSU/Autonomous Body.
- Your age is between 18 and 28 years as on 19 June 2026 (with applicable relaxations for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/ESM).
- You scored below 55% in Science subjects in your 10th board exam.
- Your ITI trade does not match any of the 11 advertised post codes.
- Your experience is part-time, daily wage, or visiting/guest faculty – such experience is explicitly excluded.
- You are above 28 years of age as on 19 June 2026 and do not qualify for any applicable relaxation category.
One critical note for this post type: apprenticeship experience is counted only from a recognised institution. Informal shop-floor training – even if spanning 2 years – will not be treated as valid apprentice experience by the screening committee.

The Scheduled Tribe (ST) category holds 11 out of 30 seats – the single largest share at 37% – reflecting the institute’s location in Jharkhand, a tribal-majority state. ST candidates applying for their reserved posts also benefit from a 5-year upper age relaxation. The Electrician trade (2026/006) has the most total seats at 7, making it the most competitive but also the broadest opportunity. With 30 total vacancies and approximately 1.5–2 lakh expected applicants based on comparable CSIR lab technician recruitments in 2024–25, the overall selection ratio stands at roughly 1 in 5,000–6,000. However, ST candidates competing only within the ST quota face comparatively lower odds – approximately 1 in 1,000–1,500 – given the narrower but category-specific pool seen in similar CSIR drives. PwBD candidates (VH for Fitter, HH for Electrician) are exempt from application fees and receive horizontal reservation across their respective category vacancies.
Salary and In-Hand Calculation
| Component | Amount (Approximate) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Pay (Pay Level-2 Minimum) | ₹19,900 | 7th CPC Level-2, minimum of scale |
| Dearness Allowance (DA) | ~₹8,955 | ~45% of Basic Pay (current DA rate) |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | ~₹3,582 | Dhanbad is Y-class city: 18% of Basic Pay |
| Transport Allowance (TA) | ~₹1,350 | Level-2 TA (plus DA on TA) |
| Gross Pay (approx.) | ~₹33,787 | Before deductions |
| NPS Deduction (~10% Basic) | −₹1,990 | National Pension System contribution |
| CGHS / Other Deductions | −₹500–₹1,000 | Varies by option selected |
| Approx. In-Hand | ₹30,000–₹37,000/month | Inclusive of HRA as notified |
The official notification states total emoluments of approximately ₹37,000 per month at the minimum of scale including HRA applicable in Dhanbad. After standard NPS and CGHS deductions, the actual take-home typically settles in the ₹30,000–₹34,000 range for a new joiner at minimum basic. Compared to similar CSIR Technician-1 (Level-2) posts at CSIR-NEIST or CSIR-IHBT – which are located in Y or Z-class cities – this posting offers a similar gross but marginally higher HRA because Dhanbad is classified as a Y-class city (18% HRA). Candidates posted at Dhanbad main campus receive approximately ₹3,582 monthly HRA; those posted at regional centres like Raniganj (also Y-class) receive a similar rate, while Roorkee and Ranchi postings may vary depending on city classification. Beyond salary, new entrants receive NPS benefits, medical reimbursement (CGHS pattern), Leave Travel Concession, and access to CSIR housing allocation under CSIR (Allotment of Accommodation) Rules-2022.
Application Fee
| Category | Fee | Payment Mode |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC / EWS (Male) | ₹500 (non-refundable) | SBI Collect (online) |
| SC / ST / PwBD / Women / Ex-Servicemen | Nil (exempted) | N/A |
Fee payment must be done via SBI Collect by 17 June 2026 – two days before the application deadline. A common error on the CSIR portal is uploading the SBI Collect e-receipt after submitting the application form; the system requires the receipt to be uploaded during form submission. Download and save your e-receipt immediately after payment and keep the transaction reference number on hand.
Age Limit
| Category | Min Age | Max Age | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved (General / EWS) | 18 years | 28 years | Nil |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 18 years | 31 years | +3 years |
| SC / ST | 18 years | 33 years | +5 years |
| PwBD (Unreserved) | 18 years | 38 years | +10 years |
| PwBD (OBC) | 18 years | 41 years | +13 years |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 18 years | 43 years | +15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (UR) | 18 years | 28+service−3 yrs | Actual service minus 3 extra yrs |
| Departmental (CSIR employee) | 18 years | 33 years | +5 years |
Age calculation example: If your date of birth is 19 June 1998, your age as on the cut-off date 19 June 2026 is exactly 28 years – the maximum permitted for General/EWS candidates. Born on 20 June 1998 means you are ineligible. OBC candidates born on or after 19 June 1995 are within the 31-year relaxed limit. Age is determined strictly from the Matriculation/Secondary certificate; no subsequent corrections are entertained.

The most common eligibility mistake for ITI-based posts at CSIR: candidates assume that a diploma in Engineering (3-year polytechnic) automatically qualifies as equivalent to ITI. It does not – unless the candidate can produce an official order from a competent authority specifically declaring the diploma equivalent to the advertised ITI trade certificate. Final year students are not eligible; the certificate must be in hand by 19 June 2026. Equivalent qualifications are accepted only with documentary proof of equivalence from a recognised authority.
Selection Process
Stage 1: Screening
A duly constituted Screening Committee shortlists candidates based on application data. Possessing minimum qualifications does not guarantee a Trade Test call. The committee applies its own shortlisting criteria – candidates who mention higher qualifications and additional experience stand a better chance of clearing this stage.
Stage 2: Trade Test
A practical/skill test in the respective trade. This stage is qualifying in nature; only those who pass are called for the written examination. Prepare hands-on skills in your specific ITI trade – CSIR trade tests are known to be practical and trade-specific, not generic.
Stage 3: Competitive Written Examination (3 Papers)
Paper-I (1 hour, 50 questions, 100 marks) covers Mental Ability – no negative marking. Paper-II (30 min, 50 questions, 150 marks) covers General Awareness and English Language – 1 mark deducted per wrong answer. Paper-III (1 hour, 50 questions, 150 marks) covers the concerned subject/trade – 1 mark deducted per wrong answer. The final merit list is prepared exclusively on Paper-II + Paper-III scores; Paper-I is only a qualifying gate. Total time: 2 hours 30 minutes.
Your first 7 days after applying:
- Download and save your SBI Collect e-receipt and application printout before 19 June 2026 – the portal removes access after the deadline.
- Check cimfr.res.in weekly for any corrigendum or trade test syllabus notification.
- Begin revising your ITI trade subjects for Paper-III – this carries 150 marks and determines merit.
- Practice General Awareness (current affairs, science basics) and English grammar for Paper-II (150 marks combined).
- Solve Mental Ability mock tests to clear Paper-I’s qualifying threshold comfortably – it has no negative marking, so attempt all 50 questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the approximate in-hand salary for CSIR-CIMFR Technician-1 after deductions?
- Approximately ₹30,000–₹37,000 per month at the minimum of the 7th CPC Level-2 pay scale, including Dhanbad-applicable HRA (18% of basic), after standard NPS (~10% basic) and CGHS deductions. The official notification cites ₹37,000 as total emoluments at minimum basic; actual take-home after deductions is typically ₹30,000–₹34,000 for a new joiner. Verify the exact figure at the time of joining based on current DA rates.
- What is the last date to apply for CSIR-CIMFR Technician recruitment 2026?
- The online application portal closes on 19 June 2026 at 5:00 PM. However, the SBI Collect fee payment deadline is 17 June 2026 at 5:00 PM – two days earlier. Apply well before the last date to avoid server congestion on the CSIR portal during closing days.
- How many total vacancies are available and in which trades?
- As per the notification, 30 vacancies are open across 11 trades: Instrument Mechanics (3), Survey/Surveying (3), Fitter (5), Welder (2), Carpenter (1), Electrician (7), Wireman (1), Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (2), Draughtsman Civil (1), Automobile/MMV (2), and Draughtsman Mechanical (3). Electrician has the highest vacancy count at 7 seats.
- What is the minimum educational qualification for CSIR-CIMFR Technician-1?
- Candidates must have passed 10th standard (SSC) with Science subjects scoring at least 55% marks, along with an ITI certificate in the relevant trade from a recognised institution. Alternatively, 2 years’ full-time apprenticeship or 3 years’ work experience in the concerned trade under a Government/PSU/Autonomous Body (after acquiring the minimum qualification) are also accepted. Final year students are not eligible.
- What is the age limit and relaxation for OBC, SC, and ST candidates?
- The general upper age limit is 28 years as on 19 June 2026. OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates get a 3-year relaxation (up to 31), SC/ST candidates get 5 years (up to 33), and PwBD candidates get 10 years (up to 38 for UR-PwBD). The cut-off date for all age calculations is 19 June 2026. SC/ST/OBC candidates applying against unreserved vacancies do not receive age relaxation.
- Is a diploma (polytechnic) equivalent to ITI for CSIR-CIMFR Technician post 2026?
- Not automatically. A 3-year diploma is not considered equivalent to an ITI trade certificate unless the candidate submits an official order from a competent authority specifically declaring it equivalent to the advertised qualification. Without such documentary proof, the application is liable to be rejected even if the candidate is otherwise qualified.
- What is the selection process – is there negative marking in the written exam?
- The process has three stages: Screening, Trade Test (qualifying), and a 3-paper Written Examination. Paper-I (Mental Ability, 100 marks) has no negative marking. Paper-II (General Awareness + English, 150 marks combined) and Paper-III (Trade Subject, 150 marks) each carry 1 negative mark per wrong answer. The final merit list is prepared only on Paper-II and Paper-III scores, so accuracy in these two papers is critical.
