Expert Insight on Competition: Based on previous Chandigarh Administration recruitment patterns, Clerk posts typically receive 50,000-70,000 applications for 200+ vacancies (competition ratio of approximately 1:250 to 1:350). Steno-Typist posts receive fewer applications (10,000-15,000 for 20+ vacancies) due to the specialized stenography skill requirement — competition ratio of approximately 1:500 to 1:700. However, the typing/steno tests are qualifying only (no marks), so your written exam score is the sole determinant of selection.

Reservation Note: SC, OBC, EWS, ESM, and PwBD candidates who are selected on their own merit (without relaxed standards) will NOT be adjusted against reserved share of vacancies — they will be accommodated against UR vacancies based on their overall merit position. This benefits meritorious reserved category candidates.

Selection Process: 3 Stages for Chandigarh Clerk & Steno-Typist 2026

Stage 1: OMR-Based Written Examination — 200 Marks (Decisive)

All eligible candidates will appear for an offline OMR-based written examination. The exam consists of two papers of 100 marks each, held in two sessions (Morning and Evening). Each question carries 1 mark. Key advantage: NO negative marking. The medium of examination is English only. Candidates must score at least 40% marks in EACH paper (40 out of 100) to qualify. Practical tip: Since there’s no negative marking, attempt ALL questions. Even if you’re unsure, make an educated guess — you have nothing to lose.

Stage 2: Typing Test (Clerk) / Stenography Test (Steno-Typist) — Qualifying Only

Only candidates who qualify the written exam will be called for the skill test. The number of candidates called will be in the ratio of 1:20 (20 times the number of vacancies). For Clerk posts: Typing Test in English on Computer for 10 minutes at 35 w.p.m. For Steno-Typist posts: Dictation of 10 minutes at 80 w.p.m., followed by 50 minutes of transcription on computer. Practical tip for Steno candidates: Practice dictation with varying speeds (75-85 w.p.m.) as real exam conditions may have slight variations. The transcription is done on computer — ensure you’re comfortable with basic word processing software.

Stage 3: Document Verification & Final Merit List

After the skill test, the Final Merit List is prepared based purely on written exam marks (since skill tests are qualifying only). Candidates are called for Document Verification in order of merit. Original certificates must be produced — photocopies or self-attested copies are NOT accepted at this stage. The waiting list is maintained, and if selected candidates fail to join within one month (extendable in exceptional circumstances), waiting list candidates are offered appointments.

Motivational Closing: Remember, there is NO interview — your written exam performance is everything. With no negative marking, you can attempt every question confidently. The syllabus is based on 10th/12th level English, Mathematics, Statistics, Reasoning, General Knowledge, and Computer Proficiency. Consistent daily practice of 2-3 hours for 4-6 weeks is sufficient to score well. Many candidates overcomplicate preparation; stick to basics and practice previous year papers.

  1. Visit the official Chandigarh Government website: Go to https://chandigarh.gov.in/information/public-notices. Do not use any third-party or fake websites. The online form is available from 06 April 2026 at 11:00 AM.
  2. Click on the recruitment notice link and register: Find the “Clerk & Steno-Typist (English) Recruitment 2026” link. Click on “Apply Online” and complete one-time registration with your name, date of birth (as per 10th certificate), mobile number, email ID, and create a password. Note down the system-generated registration number immediately.
  3. Fill the detailed application form: Enter personal details (name, father’s name, date of birth, gender, marital status), educational qualification details (Bachelor’s degree percentage, year of passing, university name), category (UR/SC/OBC/EWS/ESM/PwBD), and PwBD sub-category (VH/HH/OH/Other) if applicable.
  4. Opt for scribe if eligible (PwBD candidates only): PwBD candidates with blindness, locomotor disability (both arms affected – BA), or cerebral palsy may opt for scribe. Check the appropriate box in the application form. Scribe’s qualification should NOT be above 10+2/Senior Secondary.
  5. Upload scanned photograph and signature: Ensure the photograph is clear, with plain white background, without cap or spectacles, full frontal view (80% face). Signature should be on white paper with black pen. Dimensions: 6.0 cm (width) × 2.0 cm (height).
  6. Upload category certificates (if applicable): Upload SC/OBC/EWS/PwBD/ESM certificates in the prescribed format. PwBD candidates must upload the Disability Certificate (Annexure VI/VII/VIII). These will be verified during Document Verification.

  9. Final submission and download: Click “Submit” after fee payment. Download the completed application form and payment receipt. Keep a hard copy safely for future reference — you will need it during Document Verification.

3 Most Common Application Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Submitting without fee payment: Registering and filling the form does NOT complete your application. Fee must be paid AND final submit button clicked. If you cannot download the application form, your application is incomplete.
  • Wrong category selection: Selecting OBC without a valid OBC certificate (with creamy layer status) will lead to rejection. Selecting PwBD without the correct disability certificate (Annexure VI/VII/VIII) is invalid. No category change is allowed after submission.
  • Uploading unclear photograph/signature: Dark, blurry, or photographs with caps/glasses will be rejected. Signature outside the 6.0×2.0 cm dimension will not be accepted.

Expert Tips to Crack Chandigarh Clerk & Steno-Typist Recruitment 2026

1. Apply in the First Week (06-15 April 2026)

The server often slows down or crashes in the last 3-4 days due to high traffic. By applying early, you avoid technical glitches, payment gateway failures, and last-minute document scanning panic. Since the fee payment deadline is 29 April (3 days after application deadline), you have some buffer — but the application form itself must be submitted by 26 April. Apply by 20 April at the latest.

2. Read the Full Notification Before Opening the Form

Most candidates skip the detailed instructions and jump directly to filling the form. Read every page — especially the footnotes about age relaxation calculation for Ex-Servicemen (military service deduction), the ICT certificate requirement (often missed!), and the PwBD scribe facility rules. This knowledge can save your application from rejection.

3. Prepare a “Document Dossier” in Advance

Create a folder with all required documents in both physical and scanned formats. Organize them category-wise: educational (Bachelor’s degree marksheets), category (caste/income certificates), ICT certificate, ID proof. Use a scanner (not mobile camera) for clear uploads — dark/blurry images are a leading cause of rejection. For PwBD candidates, ensure your disability certificate is in the correct Annexure format (VI/VII/VIII).

4. Leverage the No Negative Marking Advantage

This is RARE in government exams — absolutely NO negative marking. Your strategy should be: attempt EVERY question in both papers. Never leave any question unanswered. Even if you have no clue, make an educated guess (eliminate 1-2 options mentally) or simply guess randomly. With 4 options, random guessing gives you a 25% chance of gaining 1 mark, with zero penalty for wrong answers. Over 200 questions, this can add 10-15 marks to your score.

5. Focus on the Written Exam — It’s the Only Decisive Factor

Many candidates worry about the typing test (Clerk) or stenography test (Steno). Remember: these skill tests are QUALIFYING ONLY — they carry no marks. Your written exam score (200 marks) determines your rank and selection. The typing/steno test simply requires you to meet the minimum speed (35 w.p.m. for Clerk; 80 w.p.m. dictation + 50 min transcription for Steno). Focus 90% of your preparation on the written exam syllabus — English, GK, Math, Statistics, Reasoning, Computer Proficiency.

6. For PwBD Candidates: Claim Scribe Facility Correctly

If you are eligible for scribe (blindness, locomotor disability with both arms affected, cerebral palsy), ensure you have opted for scribe in the online application form. The scribe’s qualification should NOT be above 10+2. On exam day, you must submit Annexure-IV (proforma) along with the scribe’s photo ID proof. Also, you will receive compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of examination. Don’t miss claiming this benefit — it’s available whether you use a scribe or not.

7. Stay Updated via Official Chandigarh Website Only

Rumors about answer keys, cut-off marks, and exam dates spread quickly on WhatsApp and Telegram. Bookmark the official Chandigarh Government website (chandigarh.gov.in) and check it at least twice a week. The notification explicitly states that no individual SMS or email will be sent for updates — you are responsible for monitoring the website. The venue list for the exam will be uploaded only ONE DAY before — so check the website on the day before the exam.
